Spanish

School Picture

  • Spanish K-2
  • Spanish 3-5

Welcome to Primary Spanish with Señora Raymond! In Kindergarten, First, and Second Grades, the emphasis is on learning correct pronunciation through songs and rhymes. In primary Spanish, students will be exposed to a variety of songs, rhymes, and bilingual children’s books to help them become accustomed to hearing a new language. Students will rarely see written Spanish at this level because they are still learning written English. Students will learn basic vocabulary including, but not limited to, numbers 1-20, colors, and greetings. Students in grades 1-2 will begin learning Catholic Prayers in Spanish including, but not limited to, The Sign of the Cross and the Glory Be. Students have one thirty minute period of Spanish Class weekly. Ask your primary student about Bate (bah-tay), Bate (bah-tay), Chocolate (cho-co-la-tay)!

Students in grades 1 and 2 will receive Spanish grades on their quarterly report card. Possible grades are U (Unsatisfactory), S- (Fair), S (Satisfactory), S+ (Above Average), and O (Outstanding). Students in kindergarten will not receive a grade for Spanish.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Raymond at eraymond@saintsusanna.com or 317-839-3713 x139.

Sample Classroom Activity:

Chant a Rhyme Kindergarten through Grade 2: Bate, Bate Chocolate (Stir, Stir Chocolate) Children in Mexico often drink chocolate (like hot cocoa, only thicker) with breakfast. They stir it with a special utensil called a molinillo which is held between the palms and rotated back and forth. For part of this rhyme, children rub their palms together and pretend to"stir the chocolate with a molinillo. Children repeat the rhyme, faster and faster each time. We typically do Bate, Bate Chocolate three times in succession, once slowly, once at a normal speed, and one time fast. You can guess which speed the kids love!

Welcome to Intermediate Spanish with Señora Raymond! In Third, Fourth, and Fifth grades, the emphasis is on learning basic Spanish skills including reading simple words and conversing with our peers. In intermediate Spanish, students will re-learn basic vocabulary, but will expand upon it at a higher level. Students will complete written work in Spanish, and will have quizzes over vocabulary. Students will learn vocabulary including, but not limited to, numbers, colors, clothing, body parts, and advanced greetings. Students in grades 3-5 will begin learning Catholic Prayers in Spanish including, but not limited to, The Sign of the Cross, the Glory Be, the Our Father, and the Blessing Before Meals. The expectations are high in intermediate Spanish; students are aware a grade of “O” for “Outstanding” is only earned rarely. Students have one thirty minute period of Spanish Class weekly. Ask your intermediate student about the Sign of the Cross!
